France 1968
Month of Revolution
Lessons of the General Strike
by Clare Doyle
MAY-JUNE 1968. Brutal police repression of student demonstrations leads to strikes. Within days 10 million French workers are on strike, many occupying their factories.
The armed forces are infected by the mood. The future of capitalism hangs in the balance, but within weeks the strike breaks up and 'order' is restored. De Gaulle and the right wing win the biggest parliamentary election victory in post-war France.
How did the movement develop? Could similar events take place elsewhere-including Britain? Could capitalism have been overthrown? These and many other questions are answered in this book.
Clare Doyle was a visitor to France in 1968 and on many occasions since. She played a central role in Militant, the forerunner to the Socialist Party, over many years, and now in the Committee for a Workers International of which the Socialist Party is part, as well as writing particularly on international affairs.
The Committee for a Workers International is reprinting France 1968: Month of Revolution with a new introduction by Clare Doyle.
