Read the Socialist - the paper that fights all the cuts

Bob Severn

The Socialist is a weekly paper that opposes all cuts to jobs and services. Why should we suffer cuts to pay the bankers' deficit, while those very same bankers - many of whom financially back the Tories - continue to enjoy a life of luxury?

A campaigning paper

The Socialist is a paper written by and for workers involved in fighting for better jobs, pay and conditions. While the big business, profit-orientated press condemns strikes, the Socialist supports and provides a strategy for action to defend and improve jobs, pay and pensions. Our paper contains reports from trade unionists and campaigners on the frontline of fighting cuts.

New workers' party

The Socialist is the only paper that makes the clear call for trade unions to stop funding New Labour, and instead back anti-cuts election candidates. The Labour Party leader opposes the 30 November public sector pensions strike. All Labour-led councils - elected to fight the Tories - are making cuts in jobs and services at the orders of the Con-Dem government, instead of fighting for 'needs budgets'. Yet the three biggest unions, Unison, Unite and the GMB, still give their members' money to New Labour.

Labour is now an out-and-out big business party. We need a party for the millions, not the millionaires. This is why the Socialist is backing the call by leading London RMT transport union and FBU fire-fighters' union members for anti-cuts candidates in the 2012 London assembly elections.

Students

The Socialist reports the campaigning work by Socialist Students for free education for all. The Socialist stands for the scrapping of university tuition fees and the restoration of EMA, and opposes all cuts and privatisation in education, including 'academies' and 'free schools'.

Young people

Almost one million young people are out of work. The Socialist gives exclusive coverage of the Youth Fight for Jobs campaign. We have reported on the Jarrow to London 2012 march, which finishes on 5 November, and will continue to support young people's fight for a future with decent jobs.

International

The Socialist gives reports by members of the Committee for a Workers' International from across the world. It shows how you can support struggles in other countries, including by taking action in Britain.

Call for action

The Socialist doesn't just commentate, but gives a guide to action, showing how you can support and take part in fighting the cuts.

Socialist alternative

Capitalism is a failed system. A world economy based on driving down workers' wages and increasing debt has resulted in catastrophe that all but the very rich are suffering for.

The Socialist calls for the big corporations' and banks' resources to be taken out of the hands of a few billionaires and instead put under the democratic control and ownership of the majority.

Democratically planned economies would have the potential to stop hunger, provide decent housing, education and healthcare for all, and save the world's environment.
