Appeal for TUSC candidates – as GMB cuts funding to Labour

Press release from London Socialist Party:

Unions should stand candidates say socialists as GMB proposes cut to its funding to New Labour by 90%

Paula Mitchell, London Socialist Party regional secretary said:

“The funding cut shows that union members and ordinary working class people have no confidence in the Labour Party.

The party has consistently spoken out against workers in disputes and says that it will stick to the Tories’ spending cuts if elected in 2015. It’s time to ditch Labour.

The GMB now needs to join the campaign for genuine political representation. We say that the union should use the money that it is saving, to fund candidates that stand on a clear anti-cuts programme.

Many trade unionists and anti-cuts campaigners are already doing this as part of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).

TUSC was launched in 2010 to provide an electoral alternative to the three bosses’ parties. It is officially supported by the RMT union as well as being supported by leading members of the PCS, FBU, NUT and POA unions.

TUSC plans to stand widely in the 2014 council elections. We would encourage members of all unions including the GMB to stand and build an alternative to the parties of crisis and cuts.”
