Leicester protest
ABOUT 25 Tamil people held a protest in Leicester city centre on 18 November against the Sri Lankan government's role in the killings and starvation of Tamil people there. Supporters of the Leicester Tamil Association, representing the small local Tamil population of about 150 families held placards, leafleted and petitioned passers-by.
Steve Score
Socialist Party members supported the protest. The article in last week's the socialist was photocopied by the organisers, blown up and put on placards for demonstrators to hold. I ended up speaking live on a Tamil radio station over the phone during the protest!
Protest organiser Kumar said: "We want to stop the humanitarian crisis. Our aim is to bring awareness of the plight of Tamil people in Sri Lanka to the population of Leicester. We will be petitioning our local MPs and Tony Blair to protest to the Sri Lankan government to stop the deplorable atrocities immediately."
