Anger against Portugal’s PM in London

Socialist Party members joined emigrants from Portugal, on Thursday 28th November, to protest the presence of Pedro Passos Coelho, Portugal’s PM, in Britain. Passos knows exactly where his base is, he was addressing a lecture for big business leaders from Britain and Portugal.

The Portuguese protesters were furious at Passos’ presence. 400 young people are leaving Portugal every month. Many are moving to London as they feel there is no hope for them at home; the youth unemployment rate has been rising beyond 40%. The austerity measures of Passos’ right-wing ruling coalition have devastated Portuguese society; cuts, tax hikes, and privatisation.

But the Portuguese working class is fighting back! At the beginning of this year, 1.5 million anti-austerity protesters responded to the call for demonstrations on the streets.

We were proud to sell the paper of our sister section in Portugal, Socialismo Revolucionário (Revolutionary Socialists).
