Campaigns news in brief

    East Mids conference

Socialist Party members held their annual regional conference on 31 January. We discussed events in Greece and Britain’s coming election, as well as women’s, young people’s and workplace campaign work. New, young members were elected to our regional committee. We added pledges of £280 to the £2,700 already paid towards the national election appeal.

    Swansea TUSC

Swansea TUSC held a ‘street ballot’ of 188 people on 7 February. The poll returned a 0% result for “Labour councillors making Tory cuts”, as compared to 100% for “representatives who will fight the cuts”.

    Nottingham eviction

Almost 300 people gathered on an estate near Nottingham to prevent the eviction of a local family on 23 January. Many travelled across the country to support their dispute with Bradford and Bingley over whether the mortgage had been paid. Protesters crowded the cul-de-sac’s corner to stop bailiffs getting in. But as bailiffs had parked further in, they actually got trapped by the crowd!

    Geraint Thomas

    Liverpool TUSC

The Church of England has named five Liverpool neighbourhoods as among the country’s most deprived. Labour business spokesman Chuka Umunna has described Mayor Joe Anderson as “enterprising” and “creative”. In what – bankrolling the rich while butchering the services of the needy? In any case Chuka is acting as a great recruiting sergeant for TUSC.

    Tony Mulhearn

    Socialist Students

Socialist Students is disgusted that Swansea University gave a platform to Tommy Robinson, ex-leader of the far-right English Defence League. We call on students and our student union to loudly condemn the decision to invite him onto campus. We call on the student union to organise an anti-racism protest on campus to show that far-right and racist ideas are not welcome here. If they won’t, Swansea Socialist Students will.
