Model protest letter:

To whom it may concern,

We have been following the news about the serious and worrying water crisis that São Paulo and other parts of Brazil are undergoing since last year.

We understand that a main reason is the lack of investment in infrastructure, at the same time that shareholders have been receiving billions since the partial privatisation of Sabesp, the huge water and sewage company of São Paulo.

In this situation, it comes as a chock to learn that Sabesp has sacked more than 600 workers since the beginning of the year.

The serious water crisis in São Paulo state should be a reason for keeping its workers employed – not sacking skilled and experienced workers.

One of the sacked is Marzeni Pereira, who worked for 22 years at the company. His sacking is a case of political persecution and criminalisation for his trade union activism and relentless work to expose the role and responsibility of Sabesp’s directory and the state governor of São Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB), in this crisis.

We will raise this issue in the trade union and workers’ movement in our area and consider how we can build solidarity action for Marzeni Pereira and the other sacked workers.

We demand that Marzeni and all the sacked workers are reinstated immediately!

Please send letters and motions of protest as soon as possible to the government of São Paulo and the representatives of Sabesp:
