Lincoln: Anti-fascist rally a success despite far-right threats

A Lincoln against Racism and Fascism press release

A rally against racism went ahead successfully after it was targeted by far-right supporters yesterday evening.

As campaigners from the Lincoln Against Racism and Fascism group prepared to begin their meeting at the Labour Club, EDL supporters turned up, shouting obscenities, taking photos and making threats of violence. The meeting was stewarded and the individuals did not gain access.

A spokesperson for Lincoln Against Racism and Fascism said: “We’re pleased to say that our rally went ahead successfully. There were some excellent speakers, followed by a wide-ranging debate, a fantastic response to our fundraising appeal, and more volunteers came forward to get involved with the campaign.

“Sadly, supporters of the far-right again targeted the meeting to try to intimidate participants. We condemn their threats of violence as we have condemned the numerous threats from the far-right including hate mail and death threats that individuals involved in our group have received over the last few years.

“Lincoln Against Racism and Fascism is more determined than ever to make Saturday’s demonstration a show of strength and unity against far-right intimidation. We call on all residents of Lincoln who oppose the far-right to stand tall and join us on the march.”

The counter-demonstration will take place on Saturday, assembling at 12noon at the top of Lincoln High Street near the Kind bar.

Lincoln Against Racism and Fascism was originally set up in 2006 and has organised a number of different local events to oppose racism and the far-right in the city. For more information, contact [email protected].
