Why come to Socialism 2016?

The background is crisis-ridden capitalism, a system so unequal that the richest 1% of the world’s population own more wealth than all the rest of us combined. War, poverty, unemployment and austerity blight the lives of billions.

But this experience is leading increasing numbers of people to search for an alternative. A YouGov poll revealed that more people in Britain have a favourable view of socialism than of capitalism.47% of people surveyed in the US said they would vote for a socialist for president.

Never were a bold socialist opposition and ideas more needed. We are facing the fight of our lives.

A socialist society would be able, through planning the use of the world’s enormous wealth and resources, to provide decent jobs, homes and services for everyone.

What is socialism?

But what is socialism? What is Marxism? Will it work this time? Is there an easier way to change the world? How can we kick out the Tories? Can Jeremy Corbyn win? What role can workers and young people play? Do we need parties? What about terrorism? How can we defeat racism?

The Socialism 2016 weekend will give us a chance to discuss the key questions facing us in the struggle to change the world. How can we build a powerful working class movement? How can we unite our movement in the face of division and sectarianism?

At Socialism 2016 you can hear from key activists in the fight against austerity and capitalism. The weekend will feature discussion on Marxist theory and its relevance today. It will celebrate the history of workers’ struggle and draw out the lessons.

Socialism 2016 will bring together working class fighters, trade unionists and youth and student activists, anti-cuts campaigners, and people who want to change the world, for a weekend of discussion and debate on the socialist alternative.
