Heanor postal workers seven day strike
On 18 June, Heanor post sorting office CWU members went on a week-long strike following the closure of the sorting office with relocation to nearby Ilkeston.
Royal Mail's arrogance was evident to the workforce and local people as there was no consultation. During the strike, managers were bussed in from as far away as South Wales and put up in a top hotel with expenses, in order to deliver mail around Heanor. A South Wales manager turned up at the Heanor sorting office not realising Royal Mail had closed it!
No health and safety risk assessment on how the additional 25 workers could work safely was carried out at Ilkeston prior to the closure of the Heanor depot. The local authority Environmental Officer is now involved.
