Sheffield buses campaign: ‘Saving our services’

SHEFFIELD HEELEY Socialist Party members recently interviewed 50 people in Norton Lees on the state of bus services and put together demands to the City Council and Transport Executive to improve services.

We Want Our Buses Back, a campaign started by Socialist Party members, has been fighting against high fares for years. The interviews raised issues such as the lack of low-platform buses, low frequency and particularly the run-down of services.

Many people contrasted services currently run by private companies with the cheap fares and reliable service when buses were publicly owned. One person resented ‘lining the pockets of a private company’. 88% of people responding to date want the buses returned to public ownership!

We are holding a public meeting on ‘Saving Our Services’ where the bus service will feature alongside post office closures.
