Campaign for a new workers' party

THIS WEEK, eight members of the National Executive Committee of NATFHE (the further and higher education union) have signed up to the declaration in support of the Campaign for a New Workers' Party. This is just one sign that the campaign is gaining momentum as the bankruptcy of New Labour's policies becomes even more apparent.

The gap between the agendas of the mainstream political parties and what ordinary people need is widening. Many more attacks on pensions, working conditions, the health service and the education system are planned in the near future with no party standing up for the interests of the working class.

The declaration states:

We, the undersigned, agree to campaign for the establishment of a new mass workers' party in England and Wales.
We will campaign for the calling of a representative conference as a step towards the founding of a new party.
We will also support all other genuine initiatives towards independent working-class representation, including the conference called by the RMT.

What can I do to support the campaign?

First of all, read and sign up to the declaration, if you haven't already. Email info@cnwp.org.uk to pledge your support, visit www.cnwp.org.uk to download a full version of the declaration and sign the online petition or get in touch with your local Socialist Party branch who will have paper copies of the declaration and petition.

Circulate copies of the declaration around your workplace, trade union branch, school, college or university. Discuss the campaign with others and ask them to sign the petition.

Draw up a list of those in your local area who you will approach and ask to support the campaign. All Socialist Party branches should already be working on this.

Help plan a local launch of the campaign in your area with other supporters, trade union branches, community groups, anti-war groups and others who support the declaration.

Organise stalls and activities to publicise the campaign, including stalls outside workplaces in your area.
