Victory for Andy Beadle as he wins his job back

BUS DRIVER Andy Beadle won his job back, with full back pay, at his
appeal last week. Andy is the democratically elected TGWU rep for
Peckham bus garage, dismissed for standing up for his members.

However the company has still disciplined him and he has been
transferred to neighbouring New Cross garage. This means Andy can no
longer be shop steward for his garage. The TGWU must not tolerate such
interference with the democratic wishes of its members.

The mood at Peckham garage was overwhelmingly one of relief that Andy
had not lost his job as a result of trying to do his best for the union.

Given the inertia of some sections of the union on this matter –
which was only overcome after the personal intervention of general
secretary Tony Woodley – expectations of a complete climb down by the
company were low.

Andy expressed warm gratitude to the socialist for our coverage and
asked us to thank all who had contributed to his defence. "The
solidarity from Peckham drivers and trade unionists everywhere was
tremendous. The number of messages of support, as well as the weakness
of the company’s position even under current law, undoubtedly
contributed to this outcome."

"Even if I am no longer rep, I will continue to be an active member
of the TGWU and help build the organised strength of bus workers."
