Rugby:

Say no to the tyre burners!

CAMPAIGNERS AGAINST plans for Rugby's cement works to be turned into a tyre-burning and hazardous waste incinerator have organised a protest march on 23 May.

New Bilton Against Tyre Burning (NBATB) and Rugby In Plume are marching to demand a public inquiry into these plans and also against the government's plans to prevent communities being consulted when big business intends to burn hazardous waste locally.

ROY SANDISON (Secretary and Socialist Party member) explains:

"Our campaign successfully fought to get the council to spend £300,000 on air monitoring which now shows that pollution is, at times, four times the legal limit.

"People here don't need convincing about the dangers of living next to a cement plant. We already knew it was bad for our health - now we have the evidence!

"Even worse is to come, with plans to burn millions of tyres (including importing them from abroad) as well as burning hazardous waste in Rugby in the biggest co-incinerator in Europe. Pollution will increase by an estimated 70% - our community is fighting these plans all the way. Tyre burning is being financially supported by the government -which is why they intend to get rid of public consultation".

Our march and the local election campaign of our candidate - Roy Sandison - will give local people a chance to say no tyre burning in Rugby or anywhere else for that matter!

Roy says: "The pollution level in New Bilton and Rugby is scary - yet until we started our campaign started no air monitoring was taking place despite New Bilton having Labour councillors for 80 years!

"Our community is fed up with being taken for granted and is outraged that the government is pushing the tyre burning experiment onto our community. We fully expect to do well at the election!" • Protest and march, Sunday 23 May, 2.30pm, Town Hall, Evreux Way. March to RMC Incinerator, Lawford Road, Rugby.
