The Socialist - It Is, Are You?

If you are voting socialist on 10 June, if you are a trade unionist, community campaigner, anti-war activist or just incredibly angry at the injustices of this system - you need to read the socialist.

The press and media are owned by five multi-million pound corporations, the news they report is biased in favour of the establishment and big business.

In contrast, the socialist is a paper written by working people, analysing events and pointing a way forward for those struggling to change things. The existence of a paper like the socialist is essential. And we need your help to build our sales.

In the socialist we uncover the lies and distortions of all the establishment politicians and we tell the truth! In the pages of the socialist we maintained from the start that there were no WMD and that the war in Iraq was about furthering the aims of US imperialism.

Slammed

We slammed as lies the argument that the war was to bring freedom and democracy to the people of Iraq and when a veil of silence covered the number of Iraqi dead we told of the thousands killed by the coalition forces.

All those campaigning against the occupation of Iraq need to read the socialist for analysis and a strategy to build the anti-war movement.

Some of the established press have been critical of the war and have been critical of some of New Labour's policies, but none of them dare touch on offering any real alternative or programme to the problems working people face and the existing system - capitalism. The socialist does do this.

The socialist carries regular material on the fight against cuts, privatisation and job losses, that is why our paper is widely read amongst trade unionists and workers leading these campaigns. The socialist arms the working class with analysis, ideas and a programme to aid us in campaigns and struggles.

We are also trying to re-establish the ideas of socialism amongst the working class to show that a different world is possible, free from war, terror, poverty and environmental destruction - that is a socialist world.

If you are voting socialist on June 10th, go one step further and subscribe to the socialist.

This is what trade unionists and community campaigners say about our paper:

"It is vital in these current international circumstances that those who believe in freedom, socialism and true democracy have access to a different perspective.

"The socialist plays a vital and important role in exposing the real reasons why the majority of the people of the world live in poverty and inequality."

Janice Godrich, president PCS

"Socialists, trade unionists, peace activists, and local campaigners, all require a newspaper which reports their struggles, raises solidarity, and challenges the system we live in.

The socialist newspaper does all of these things and is a vital tool in helping those who are struggling for justice and equality".

Mark Serwotka, General secretary, PCS

"I find it a useful tool to keep me in touch with what events are taking place across the country and international issues. The socialist gives a refreshing alternative to issues reported in the capitalist press.

"It is written by rank and file and elected lay members of various trade unions and it identifies the close links that the Socialist Party has with members in the workplace and the wider community."

Raph Parkinson, NEC Unison and International Committee Unison

"As a local campaigner the socialist has always given me their fullest support, they give local people the publicity and support they need, which also encourages them to carry on fighting against cuts and closures in their community.

Local papers will only report on local campaigns once or twice (if you're lucky!) but the socialist will support and publicise local campaigns to the end."

Elaine Healey, Manchester - community campaigner
