UNISON general secretary election:
Nominate Roger Bannister
SOCIALIST PARTY member Roger Bannister is standing for election as UNISON general secretary.
Nominations close on 10 December so it essential that all Socialist Party members and supporters in the union argue for their branch to nominate Roger as soon as possible.
When Roger stood in 2000 he got 71,021 votes, nearly 32%.
Standing as "A fighting general secretary on a worker's wage" he will be standing against a leadership which is increasingly seen as being too close to New Labour.
As Roger says:
"If members want to register a vote against the Labour Party or want to be balloted about continued affiliation, I'm the only candidate offering that alternative."
As secretary of the Knowsley branch, Roger has scored a major victory over the consequences of the Single Status Agreement.
He successfully lead a strike in defence of the 35-hour week. This resulted in a reduction of the working week for all 37-hour employees in Knowsley.
To nominate Roger, note that he is a member of Knowsley branch, number: 1318436.
