Save linguistics at Sussex!

At the University of Sussex, the campaign to save the linguistics courses continues. Socialist Students are taking a lead.

At the end of last term, a rally of over 150 students and staff was organised in less than 24 hours. Local MPs, prominent academics and public figures all gave their support, embarrassing management. But we know that this is not enough and only mass action from students and staff will force senior management to reverse the decision.

This isn’t just a campaign to save linguistics courses, but a fight against profit over education and how senior management is undemocratically running our university. Management refuse to open up the decision to any committee or democratic body to discuss. They have already told prospective students not to come next year.

We need to be linking campaigns like that at Sussex with other struggles, like those at London Metropolitan and Reading universities who are facing even more severe cuts. Only by staff and students working together and linking up nationally to fight senior management and the government’s attempts to privatise our education system can we beat these attacks.
