Postal workers vote overwhelmingly for national action

The result of the national ballot was:

Yes votes 61,623
No Votes 19,207.
67 % turnout

John Denton, London CWU regional secretary, told The Socialist this was the biggest ever vote for strike action in our history. He said:

"This is a magnificent vote and it puts real pressure on the management. They tried everything to harass and intimidate our members to vote against strike action including sending stuff to their homes but it hasn't worked.

"This is a bigger vote than we had in 2007 [the last time there was a vote for national action] - in fact it is the biggest ever vote for strike action in our history.

"It would be a mistake for us to take our foot off the pedal now the management is cracking. Their sickness levels are at a record high."

The postal executive is due to meet in the next few days and they should decide to call a series of strikes leading up to Christmas until the management back off.

The South Wales / South West Divisional Committee has called for any final agreement to contain amongst other things:

1. A RE-ENGAGEMENT FRAMEWORK FOR UNITS WHERE EXECUTIVE ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN
2. A STATEMENT PROTECTING ALL CWU REPS / MEMBERS INVOLVED IN ISSUES SURROUNDING the DISPUTE / PICKET LINES PAY, REWARD AND MODERNISATION
3. SHORTER WORKING WEEK
