US embassy protest remembers Trayvon Martin

Stephan Kimmerle

With slogans including "justice for Trayvon Martin!", "fight racism!" and "no justice - no peace!", all around the globe people have taken to the streets to protest the death of Trayvon Martin, a recent victim of racist US capitalism.

Trayvon was murdered on 26 February. His crime? Being young, black, and wearing a hoodie.

His killer, George Zimmerman, a self-appointed "neighborhood watch volunteer", has claimed he was acting in self-defence. Police in Florida plead they lack evidence of any crime being committed by Zimmerman.

In London, hundreds gathered in front of the US embassy on Saturday 31 March. Speakers drew the parallel to racist attacks in Britain, mentioning Mark Duggan, who was shot by London police last August, triggering protests and riots all over Britain.

As part of the rally, the Socialist Party also distributed leaflets from our sister organisation in the US, Socialist Alternative.
