Emissions of greenhouse gases that cause climate change have escalated to critical levels. They threaten catastrophe, even endangering life on the planet in the long term.

In Planning for the Planet, Pete Dickenson indicts the representatives of the capitalist market system.

He argues that their failure to address the danger is linked to deepening antagonisms between the major industrial powers.

Planning for the Planet explains how and why capitalism has failed to tackle global warming and other threats to the environment, including nuclear contamination.

The author argues that two related factors underlie the looming disaster. These are the quest for profit by big corporations and more fundamentally, the inevitable tendency of competitive markets to degrade the environment.

Planning for the Planet puts forward an alternative - a democratically managed, socialist planned economy, which creates the conditions where environmental problems can be solved in a rational, planned fashion.

Planning for the Planet argues that a change in our social system is the only way we can live in harmony with the natural world in the foreseeable future, and examines how such an alternative system would work.

Radical Greens will find Planning for the Planet of huge interest, as will labour movement activists, socialists and young people deeply concerned with environmental questions.

Pete Dickenson's 150 page book, published by Socialist Publications Ltd, will also be very useful for environmental studies students, particularly those interested in radical political economy.
