University day of action against cuts, job losses and fees

The government is planning to make £2.5 billion worth of cuts in higher education. Every student and university worker faces attacks on their education and jobs. Whoever wins the general election is it certain that a New Labour or Tory government will try to raise university fees.

As well as universities there are massive cuts in FE colleges and local councils are slashing services effecting education.

Already universities such as Sussex, Southampton, Leeds, Cardiff and Westminster have announced plans to sack hundreds of staff.

On March 18, a few days before the Easter holidays for students, HEFCE (the higher education funding council for England) will announce more detailed plans for university cuts.

The government and university managements hope they can quietly get away with taking away our right to a decent education.

We will show them that opposition exists to cuts and fees. That we won't pay for their crisis! Socialist Students has called a national day of action on March 18.

We call on all students, anti cuts campaigns, trade unions and workers to organise protests and campaigning and come out in support of striking lecturers on the day cuts are announced.
