Its time that greed ended because we are all born and we all eventually die lets at least allow everyone to have a chance at living. Richard, Birmingham, UK 17 March 2005 Would like to say, when great site and all that, big supporter of
socialism, but when you talk about 'Democracy'... Ben, Swansea
Bill Withers replied I think you make a lot of good points Ben. Can I refer you to the Russian Revolution, and in particular the fact that the Bolshevik party combined both elections and revolution? They won a massive mandate in the only genuinely unbiased elections, which were to the soviets. This undoubtedly helped legitimise the revolution even more widely. The revolution was almost entirely peaceful in the capital - there were more people killed when the famous film maker Eisenstein did an amazing film about it. If the revolution had been successful in western Europe, as Lenin and Trotsky hoped, we would then never have suffered a second world war, mass starvation, and all the evils capitalism continues to inflict on the world. Unfortunately the leadership in Germany and elsewhere was too inexperienced, and instead the Russian revolution was asphyxiated by western imperialism, which resulted in the monstrous growth of Stalinism.
17 November 2004 IraqYellow Ribbon Ignorance They indiscriminately kill anything that moves, drop bombs on populated neighborhoods, tortured POWS, and recently prevented humanitarian aid from reaching innocent civilians in war-torn Falluja. In turn, these “heroes” have killed over 100,000 (Bllomberg School of Public Health) innocent Iraqi citizens in the name of Freedom and Democracy. One can simply say these “heroes” are following orders; they’re doing just what they are told. My heroes don’t kill innocent civilians, but are those who refuse any order which causes civilian deaths. My heroes heed the Christian principles, of not judging, loving thy enemy and helping the poor and afflicted. Helping poor and afflicted Iraqis by killing 100,000 of them is the most criminal and hypercritical help possible. Furthermore, doesn’t the death of innocent civilians cause you to question the morality of these deadly military operations? Why is it that we only mourn the over 1,000 dead US soldiers who made the conscious choice to be soldiers? If our moral quest in Iraq is to help the Iraqi people, then why are Iraqi civilian deaths less significant to our society? The motives of this nation and its citizens must be challenged if we
continue to disregard the civilian casualties and pure destruction we have
and continue to cause. Byron, Texas, USA
Sandra adds: (22 November 2004) Byron’s “Yellow Ribbon Ignorance” affirms how misinformed many of the U.S. citizens are about heroes and the “yellow ribbon” symbol. The "yellow ribbon" began during Carter's administration when U.S. hostages were held in Iran. The song, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree" was the impetus that instigated the movement in hopes that those hostages would be released unharmed. As Byron said, the symbol is now showing support for heroes that disregard the rules of war. How sad it is that a symbol used for hope in the safe return of our hostages is now a symbol to glorify the killings of innocent victims of war. Sandra, Texas, USA Editor adds: the Socialist Party supports Socialist Alternative in the USA and its paper Justice, http://www.socialistalternative.org/justice40/toc.html
J. R adds (21 November 2004) Surely if less than 60% of the population voted and some say 3 million were stopped by the Republicans - and only just over half voted Bush, surely two-thirds to three-quarters of the country don't buy the whole thing. Probably including some undecideds who voted Bush. We need a party for the *majority* J. R. Wyoming, USA 17 November 2004 I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one trying to do something about all these half naked women in lads magazines, advertising etc. I have complained numerous times to the magazines themselves, even contacted an MP only to be told that the editors have all control on their content,as well as front cover,as long as its not pornographic.Offensiveness is not a concern apparently. I was told that's what comes from living in a democracy! I am so sick with being faced with these magazines everywhere I go,and there's nothing I can do about it! Gemma, Aberdeenshire USA Election3 November 2004 You guys are different from the so-called liberals I guess. The bleeding heart liberals just blame the American people, but there's no real news down here in the South. The truth is suppressed. The local paper don't carry critical news. The heroes return [from Iraq - ed] with their legs blown off and they get a nice picture and we're told they'd do it all again. It just bull. I couldn't vote Nader, he couldn't get on the poll. Democracy? No name supplied, USA I am disgusted at the ignorance of my country to re-elect such a fool, such a dangerous man...I'm tired of big business running the world...I want change and I want to be a part of something that can maybe bring change...I want to move out of this country to a more "socialist" country, I need help...peace Mackenzie, Kentucky, USA The UK today29 October 2004 I am sick of payin high taxes, sick of our crap police who we think it pointless to ring. i am sick of the relentless circle that the upper and middle class make, one always taking power from the other and using the lower classes as their weapon, then pushing the lower classes down again to where they think they belong! i am gutted by innocent lives lost all over the world not just iraq, i am worried that we are ending up like orwell predicted (oceana) especially with the government introducing I.D. cards and charging us for having our civil liberties taken away! Richard, Durham, UK 25 October 2004 I am a social work student in Liverpool, and outraged at the way people have to live in this city. There is so much emphasis on the 'Capitol of Culture' that ordinary people, with no voice, are being forgotten about. I know this is the same all over the UK, and the world under the capitalist system and i want to know more about real alternatives. Julie, Merseyside, UK 16 October 2004 It is my opinion that it the modern, Western world there is currently no mass movement towards a socialist revolution. The masses have become materialistic and unpolitical, mostly content to live off the concessions that have been granted to them by the ruling elite after years of struggle from the left. To the man in the street, communism means Stalin and oppression. However, we should not lose hope. The massive anti-war protests have proven that there is an anti-US hegemony feeling in the masses, however unfocused it may be. It should be the duty of this party to cultivate this feeling into moving towards an revolution of empathy; of sympathy for fellow human beings left without water, decent living standards or wages by capitalism. To accomplish this the party must present itself to the masses in a new way. Shaking off the corpse of Stalinism and emerging into the 21st century as a new party, one that stresses and ultra-democratic revolution. The current system is geared against our movement. But progress and technology are in our favour. Initially we must pressure for proportional representation to enable us to receive a fair allocation of seats within the house. We must also work within the popular parties (such as Labour and the Lib Dem's) by infiltrating their parties (as Trotsky suggested of his Left Opposition in France and Spain during the 30's) to move their political orientation to the left. We must also move for new forms of democracy such as internet voting and mobile phone voting, not just every four years but on every major issue. George Bush said he went to war in Iraq to make democracy safe for the world, but in going against the majority anti war feeling, he merely made democracy irrelevant by showing that, once elected, politicians are left to their own devices for four years and not accountable to people they are elected to represent. "My faith in the communist future of mankind is more ardent now than ever before. Life is beautiful. Let future generations cleanse it of all violence, oppression and suffering and enjoy it to the full." - Leon Trotsky, Mexico 1941 Edward John, Vale of Glamorgan Editor: We may not agree with everything here or some of the tactical suggestions you make, Edward, (we've been there before) but we're with you 100% on your confidence that things are moving our way, and your commitment to that socialist future. Click here to follow this discussion - update 4 November 2004 Sexism27 August 2004 I completely agree on everything here - I am sick of ALL men's magazines having a model wearing hardly anything or nothing at all on the front covers. Men claim they love football and beer as much as women but you don't see these on the front covers of their magazines!! I've tried to make my feelings known and I have complained to so many different people but it just gets played right down and i'm made to think i'm making a fuss over nothing when quite frankly I don't think I am. Then again most of my complaints have gone to men and they have been addressed by men so that would explain it I guess. I, like you am not against sex, or men for that matter I just find it increasingly difficult to cope with seeing so many naked and semi naked girls every time I go into a shop. Society has gone mad and people bang on about freedom of expression and speech way too much and they are forgetting that children are living in this world too and they have to see what we see too everyday and the damage we must be doing to their little minds is very worrying to me. I really do feel we are causing more harm than good here but then this is nowhere near as important as Iraq and other problems in our world...or is it?!! Nikki, Portsmouth

Is it a necessary step to preserve our environment or an oppression of freedom of travel? Is the Congestion Charge in central London fair? Or is the key to less cars on the road better and cheaper public transport? Is Ken Livingston delivering this? Should we give people the choice which form of travel they use or tax them out of their cars and onto buses, trains, tubes? Also what is the SP's view on the current obesity problems? Is it simply a case of the big food corporations "making" us fat with unhealthy food and marketing of fast food products? Or could we do more to exercise and eat healthier? Surely it's a bad idea to close down playing fields. Also should we have a tax on fatty foods? Or is this an infringement of free food choice? Dan Factor, London On our website: Food: High Fat, High Sugar And High Profit - The Socialist 17 January 2004 Can Socialism save the environment? Global Warning- Socialism and the environment- 11 The Road to Nowhere Transport: Buses- Put Privatisation Into Reverse! | The Socialist 22 May 2004 No mention of taxing people in either article - the Socialist Party's position on tax is (put very crudely) that ordinary working class people pay far too much tax as it is. (See link below for more.) Clearly we would agree with you that the key to less cars is better and cheaper public transport. Also see Council tax and local services - Socialist Party manifesto 20 June 2004 Blimey! Virtually everything we do and depend upon is bad. From the guy delivering pizza on his motorbike to people working in HGVs. Thing is, most people, ordinary people depend upon the car. But before our politicans tell us to ditch the car and get out on public transport they need to produce a safe, reliable and cheep public transport service. Ken Livingstone isn't exactly doing that in London. The price of bus and tube fairs has gone up (£1.20 for just one tube stop) and the comparison with the London Congestion charge and an off-peak 1-4 zone travel card is just 30pence. Most people would pay the extra 30p and use their car to get into London. Dan Factor, London 23 May 2004 Socialist advocators around the globe are few. what we must do is to unite and to teach all the workers about our ideology and help them to open their eyes to see the reality that capitalism is the cause of their poverty and the true nature of capitalism is the freedom of exploitation. iskra, Philippines 18 May 2004 What sickens me is how contemptible Blair and Bush are

Alas I fear without the internet this kind of place to enhance ones understanding of the "big picture" wouldn't be possible. Given that the only way democratic socialism can take over from capitalism (and survive) is by world-wide simultaneous revolt, what are the socialist parties going to do about that? You are being beaten to teaching understanding by the way the capitalist system works - from your first days at school to the media to the law. How can everyone understand at once? Matt, Lincoln, UK Replies:Kevin from Germany replied: (24 March) I was thinking the same, Matt. Sam from London: It was more or less simultaneous (historically speaking) when the great mass of people in the countries of the former Soviet Union, and all of eastern Europe, overthrew the dictatorships there, some really vicious one's like East Germany - 1979 through to 1981, revolution rolling from one country to another, with all the spies and KGB and army and secret police helpless to stop it. Unfortunately they didn't have socialism on offer, just a load of wannabe capitalists posing as democrats. The Socialist Party in the UK and the other sections of the Committee for a Workers International (which all have different names) has to make sure Socialism is on offer next time. This means you must join and help. Kevin is right, capitalism always has crises, boom, slump, growth, depression, and it needs to be overthrown or it will stagger on, dragging wars, genocide and barbarism behind it, all around the world. It's this continual turmoil which leads people to draw the necessary conclusions. Sam

[From previous questions: see below - ed] Talking to you and a representative from your sister party here in Germany definitely inspired me to want to know more. Being honest, I do have a lot more questions, and what the Socialist Party is saying sounds very utopian. But when you've recognised something as an ideal, why not strive for it? I agree that it is a courageous thing to become active in a political movement. Better than sitting around resigned to your fate, hoping someone else will change things for you. Take care Kevin, Germany (Click here for Kevin's earlier remarks) Thanks Kevin - it ain't utopian, it's a vital necessity! Sexism15 March 2004 Re: Intenational Woman's Day and sexist advertising and media. A lot of "sexist" advertising has gone the other way and it's often men who get negatively stereotyped... As for magazine's like NUTS... I don't think they have any great effect on how women are seen in today's society... Dan, London Replies The Socialist Party gives solidarity with all oppressed - working class men are exploited and oppressed, but working class women are doubly oppressed, as are ethnic minorities.
We support their struggle. For instance the struggle of the nursery nurses, low paid women workers who do a vital, yet massively undervalued job for the next generation: Nursery Nurses: Strikers Say No To Low Pay Dan, divided we are weak, united we are strong! Angus, Isle of Sheppy Dan replies: Ok fair enough. But is anti sexism really about trying to stop people reading certain magazines eg: lads magazines?...
Click here to send your Comments No, that would be going about things from the wrong end of the job. There's nowhere in this site that says that so far as I know. The ISR and the Socialist Party protested against IPC, which publishes NUTS magazine. This and other sexist magazines are owned by a handful of extremely rich media bosses who make a fortune out of reinforcing sexist stereotypes. That's the target. But whilst we're on the subject of players' wages why don't they question the huge pay offs bosses are getting whilst their companies go under and their workers get chucked onto the scrapheap. Alex, Kent Socialist transformation needed14 January 2004 Whilst I understand your goals, a better world for the working class and an end to class divisions, I do not believe you will ever be able to achieve this within a capitalist political system. Your political aims do not attempt to overthrow the capitalist system but attempt to control it. History has shown that this never works as it can only ever gain small short term concessions and will mean the leaking of capital out of country leading to job losses etc etc. What is needed is for there to be a revolution in which the capitalist system is scraped altogether and form a fully socialist one which keeps any capital within the country. Any other course will mean that the capitalists will maintain control. Name withheld
Jessica, Rensselaer, In, USA, wrote (5 March 2004) Dear "name withheld" my mother taught me to respect others opinions, and i live by this today...like many have said, we don't want to control it we want to change it to the government that would provide jobs to the unemployed, it would stop the rich from getting richer and the poor from getting poorer. Apparently there is a reason why we as a socialist group is trying to change the capitalist countries, there needs to be a change...why would we want to control something that we don't want anymore...it isn't a thought of control, we are trying to give the people a chance to grow and have the freedoms that we are intended to have... the country is made up of people, not just the rich, or the powerful...people is what the country needs to work...people are what makes the world go round , not money.. true we say that we need money for things like food, shelter, etc, etc. we have taught our children and our parents have taught us that since we existed in this turmoil and corrupted world. When we say for the people we mean it, we don't mean for the politicians, for the rich or whatever, we mean the P-E-O-P-L-E! we are not here to control...oh no far, far , far from it my friend, we are here to change. and i'm proud to say that i'm helping with the change of the world....
"Name Withheld" is wrong to say that our political aims "do not attempt to overthrow the capitalist system but attempt to control it." The Socialist Party aims for a socialist transformation of society, where capital is abolished and the use of the resources of the planet is democratically planned. I agree that you cannot permanently reform capitalism for the reasons "Name withheld" explains - amongst others. This is explained more fully on this website (Click here. Additional reading on our website here. Links open in new window.) But should we therefore abandon or downgrade our support for the struggle for reforms, for instance against top-up fees, which are - in part - attempts to limit or "control" capitalism? I think that this is what "Name Withheld" is hinting at. I disagree.
