Election campaigns boost sales of the socialist

With local elections getting nearer, sales of the socialist are increasing as more people, sick of cuts, closures and privatisation, want to read about the campaigns and ideas of the Socialist Party.

Bob Severn, the socialist, national sales organiser

In Coventry, where the Socialist Party have two councillors and are standing in five wards, 101 papers were sold from the weekend town stall with £103 raised in fighting fund.

Campaigning against local hospital job cuts in Stoke, 58 copies of the socialist were sold on the Friday stall with another 80 sold on Saturday. Along with regular buyers and election canvassing sessions to get Socialist Party councillor Paul Sutton re-elected in Abbey Green, 169 papers were sold by the end of the weekend.

Election door-to-door canvassers in Lewisham Telegraph Hill ward raised £121.27 last Sunday. Forty-two copies of the socialist were sold, taking the paper sales total for the election campaign to 262.

The Walthamstow Saturday stall, campaigning against job cuts in the NHS, sold 46 papers. Another 23 papers were sold the next day when canvassing for local election candidate Claire Buddle.

In Southwark, where Lois Austin is standing for the Socialist Party, out of 23 people we spoke to on the doorstep about stopping the council from selling off local housing, 20 bought a copy of the socialist.

Over 50 papers were sold in Newcastle on Saturday when campaigning against hospital cuts, closures and privatisation. Paul Owens is standing for the Socialist Party in Byker ward.

Nick Chaffey is standing for the Socialist Party in Southampton's Bevois ward. Southampton branch's weekly paper order has now doubled to 150 for the rest of the election campaign, with 50 papers being sold just over the weekend.

In Huddersfield 40 papers were sold on the Socialist Party stall when campaigning to Save Huddersfield NHS. Another 24 papers were sold when election canvassing over the weekend.

Dave Warren reports from Swansea: "Our branch is campaigning against the closure of a geriatric hospital and ward closures at other hospitals in the city. We took 50 papers to our sale on Saturday and sold the lot in an hour and a half. We also sold 40 papers from a stall on Friday."

Leicester branch are also campaigning against NHS cuts and closures, and sold 22 papers on Saturday.

Make sure your branch has got plans in place for paper sales and stalls next week. And don't forget to send in your reports!
