CWU Broad Left Affiliates To ISR
ON 10 JANUARY representatives from International Socialist
Resistance (ISR) were invited to speak at the annual meeting of the
Communication Workers' Union (CWU) broad left.
Pav Alam, Socialist Party member and newly elected bulletin
editor, had suggested an ISR speaker on the campaign to support Colombian trade
unionists and other ISR campaigns, such as against top-up fees and for a decent
minimum wage for all with no youth exemptions.
Pav, who proposed the affiliation and Steve Wootton from
the South West who seconded it, both spoke on the need for the union, and
especially the broad left, to orientate towards young workers and that
affiliating to ISR provided an opportunity for a two-way learning process. It
is not always clear to young people what the point of joining a union is and
trade unionists are not always aware of what issues are the most important to
young people.
We hope this will be the start of closer co-operation
between the lefts in the trade unions and ISR. Socialist Party and ISR members
in other unions should consider similar affiliations. One of ISR's main
campaigns is against low pay.
