Home | The Socialist 13 April 2006 | Join the Socialist Party May Day greetingsMANY PEOPLE will have their first contact with the Socialist Party during our current local election campaigns. Some will, as well as signing petitions against council cuts, privatisation and giving campaign donations, buy a copy of the socialist to find out more about the Socialist Party and our campaigns. The socialist shows voters that there is an alternative to the 'slash and burn' policies of New Labour, the Tories and Lib Dems, including this week's pull-out election manifesto, the interviews with our councillors last week, and the centre page on local government services in issue 433. Every year the socialist appeals for May Day greetings to help show the range of campaigning work socialists are involved in both across England and Wales and internationally. May Day is traditionally the time to celebrate the past achievements of workers in struggle, and look forward to future gains. It is only through the organisation of working-class people that basic rights have been won off capitalist employers and governments. Now, the socialist reports on the current struggles to defend and improve such basic rights as wages, working conditions, public services, and pensions. Having a May Day greeting in the socialist helps fund an alternative press to that of the profit- driven mainstream newspapers. Unlike mainstream papers, the socialist is not funded by the advertising campaigns of multinational companies, but by our readers and supporters. This is why we appeal to you to help raise money for May Day this year. Make sure your Socialist Party branch, trade union branch, student group or community campaign gets a May Day display this year. Why not go round your workplace or group and ask for donations to help fund a May Day greeting? With your help, the socialist can continue to report on the day-to-day struggles while putting forward the need for a socialist society, run by the millions, not the millionaires. > Send your greeting now! Rates include: 30p per word, £10 small box, 1/32 page £15, 1/16 page £25, and 1/8 page £40. Contact 020 8988 8796 or circulation@socialistparty.org.uk for more details.
