IN A welcome development, the National Union of Students has rejected (by 20 votes) a proposed new constitution, which would have slashed democratic representation in the NUS.

This attempt to insulate the NUS New Labour leadership from pressure from ordinary students who oppose fees and other government attacks, was voted down after a mobilisation of more students than NUS conference has seen in previous years. Students rallied to preserve a national organisation, which is a vital tool for campaigning to defend students' rights.
