Panicky MPs turn on Labour

CRISIS STORMS in the world economy, price inflation roars in the British economy; now rebellion bellows in the Labour Party. Well, ‘bellows’ is a bit of an exaggeration.

Worried by opinion polls showing Labour trailing the Tories by 19%, some previously comatose junior Labour ministers have been demanding that Gordon Brown faces a challenge to his leadership at Labour Party conference.

But the problem is not just Brown but the fact that New Labour is now an openly capitalist party. John McDonnell, one of the few genuine left-wing Labour MPs, quite correctly dismisses the latest in-fighting as “mere faction fighting without a single policy difference between the two sides.”

He said the MPs and junior ministers’ demand for an election was meaningless without a commitment to change the government’s direction.

The Socialist Party agrees. We will keep fighting for a new mass workers’ party, for an independent voice for the working class.

We need a party that fights as hard for workers as New Labour fights for capitalism.
