Everything for sale

Not content with taking thousands of pounds a year off us already, Huddersfield University is charging £15 a ticket to attend its graduation ceremony and £10 to watch the ceremony via a video link.

Sam Bell, Huddersfield Socialist Students

Despite already paying £3,000+ a year in fees we are still expected to pay to have family and friends watch us graduate. Families are rightly proud of their loved ones' achievements, and don't want to miss their graduation ceremony. Also, students who choose to wear a gown, and most do, have to pay to hire one for the day.

This all boils down to government policies. They spend billions on bailing out banks, unjust wars, trident nuclear weapons, private finance initiatives, etc, rather than on services like education, hospitals and housing.

Yet we shouldn't take this lying down. If enough of us make a fuss, with petitions and noisy protests, we will have an effect.

Campaign meeting: Thursday 13 May, University of Huddersfield Students' Union, 5pm.
