Finance a socialist future!

BELIEVE IT or not, the obscene wealth of the rich according to the Sunday Times Rich List increased in the last year. Brown, Clegg and Cameron stand there on TV and tell us 'we're all in this together" and have no choice but to accept savage cuts in vital public services. Yet the combined wealth of the Rich List has increased by one third - in the midst of one of modern history's greatest economic crises, the rich just got richer.

Ken Douglas, Socialist Party national treasurer

In reality the capitalists and their political representatives don't know what to do to solve the problems of the economy. But that won't stop them using the crisis to attack the hard-won gains that working-class people have made over the last century.

The NHS, a free education system, the retirement age, a living pension, sickness and disability benefits - all will be savagely attacked to maintain this sick system of capitalism. Bank of England governor Mervyn King, has said that the party that gets into government will become so unpopular that it will be voted out of power for a generation. That indicates the scale of attacks that will take place.

However, it doesn't have to be like this. The working class is the most powerful force in society. With a united strategy of strike action to resist the cuts, backed by a mass campaign in every local community, no-one could stand in our way. That has to be our aim - the fightback starts from today.

The Socialist Party will be in the forefront of every campaign to defend our living standards, our local services - above all else the struggle to build a political alternative, a powerful voice for working people - a new mass party of the working class.

But we also have a vision of a different future, of a society where the tremendous wealth and potential in the world is democratically planned and controlled for the benefit of all; where the world's natural resources are conserved and husbanded for the benefit of future generations.

We need your support to get the ideas of socialism out to as wide an audience as possible. We need to be able to produce more books, pamphlets and leaflets, to build the party's website, to produce more videos and respond to events as they arise.
