Liverpool TUSC: Standing against Labour's cuts
Alec Price
Following Tony Mulhearn's campaign for mayor, activists in Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) are continuing to push their anti-cuts policies in Liverpool, standing in two 5 July council byelections.
The Labour stronghold of Riverside, where Tony Mulhearn came second, will be contested following the ward's former councillor Joe Anderson's election as mayor.
Chris McDermott, who is standing for TUSC, said: "I am a former member of the Labour Party. I've seen the party degenerate and become cosier and cosier with the Tory party. Passing on Tory cuts is not acceptable; we need to actively fight them.
"The truth is Labour no longer represents working class people. We will send a clear message to Labour and the government that we won't pay for the bankers' mess with cuts to our jobs, benefits and vital services."
In the former Lib Dem fortress of Allerton and Hunts Cross, Lynne Wild is standing for TUSC.
Lynne said: "Children's centres are facing a 53% cut thanks to our Labour council and its friends in government. Picking on children to take the brunt of the cuts is absolutely disgusting. We need to be investing in these vital services so we can provide jobs and offer a decent and humane society to live in."
Endorsing both candidates, Tony Mulhearn said: "We have laid the basis for TUSC to become a force in Liverpool. Both of the prospective candidates supported my mayoral campaign. If you voted for Tony Mulhearn for mayor, then support Lynne and Chris in the byelections. Build the fight against cuts by voting for the TUSC candidates on 5 July."
