Malaysia: Opposition mounting against Najib’s government

In the wake of the stock market crisis in China and a dip in commodity prices, Malaysia saw a mass gathering in the streets of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, lasting for two days over the last weekend in August.

This is the fourth instalment of the Bersih (Clean) protests that started in 2007 as a democratic movement to reform the parliamentary electoral system, which favours the ruling government coalition Barisan Nasional (BN).

In 2007, there were about 30,000 participants but the number has grown on each protest, and this year an estimated 200,000 people turned up wearing yellow t-shirts (the official colour of Bersih).

Once again the Northern Ireland Executive is facing a real risk of a collapse. A crisis erupted in the aftermath of the killing of Kevin McGuigan in the Short Strand area of Belfast on 13 August.

Whatever happens next, the latest crisis only serves to underline the plain fact that the peace process has not delivered on any of its promises.

The establishment of a new political party, which seeks to unite Catholics and Protestants in a common struggle for a better life, would undermine support for the sectarian parties.
