What we saw

Sadiq Khan, the Labour candidate for London mayor, is not even trying to hide his unreconstructed Blairite politics.

London Labour members have received letters from him, promising “I’ll be the most pro-business mayor London has ever had.” The former member of Gordon Brown’s pro-privatisation cabinet declares: “Business will always have a seat at the table when I’m mayor.”

No wonder he appeared in the “hostile” category of the recently leaked ranking of Labour MPs’ loyalty to Jeremy Corbyn. So did pro-bombing Waltham Forest MP Stella Creasy.

In all, the list counts 85 Labour MPs opposed to the left leadership, and 72 apparent neutrals. Perhaps fancifully, 75 MPs rank as at least somewhat positive.

The Tories made a big noise over divisions in Labour when the document came out. But they are just as divided. The only way Corbyn can gain the advantage is to stop accommodating Blairites. That would open the gate to a flood of active support, and allow a combative anti-austerity stand, unfettered by cutters.
