Victory! Balfour Beatty withdraws BESNA contracts

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has backed down on imposing contracts which would have terminated long-held agreements, leading to pay cuts of up to 30% and poorer terms and conditions for key construction staff.

This is a major victory for electricians, plumbers, heating and ventilating engineers who have twice voted overwhelmingly for strike action and for the activists who have been carrying out weekly protest actions.

BBES was one of seven construction firms who sought to tear up the long-standing Joint Industry Boards agreements and impose new semi-skilled grades.

Unite the union is now calling on the other six firms to follow Balfour Beatty and withdraw the new contracts.
