MMP callously announces Bootle plant will close

Socialist Party members Tony Mulhearn and Dave Walsh have today visited workers gathered outside the Mayr Melnhof Packaging (MMP) plant in Bootle following news that the employer has announced that the plant will be closed.

MMP has made an offer of redundancy terms to the workers which has already been rejected on more than one occasion.

The offer seems designed to divide the workers as a section of them have been invited to individual meetings for ‘informal discussions’ without a union presence, as to redundancy terms. Others remain sacked.

The widest support needs to be mobilised in support of these workers who are up against a brutal employer.

The workers have been invited to attend Tony Mulhearn’s mayoral election campaign launch meeting next Wednesday 4 April, in Liverpool, and to provide a speaker to give an up-to-date report.
