Coventry: Fight for a socialist alternative

The Coventry Observer reports that: "Coventry City Council is in line to win an award for the way it has delivered budget cuts.

"The organisation, which has been forced to save millions of pounds in the last two years, is one of three nominated at the Improvement and Efficiency Awards later this month...

"Leader Councillor John Mutton said widespread government cuts meant facing up to difficult challenges in the coming years but added the programme had helped minimise their impact."

All he and the Labour council, elected to defend working class people against the Con-Dems' axe, can do is promise more cuts. He told the Observer: "As cuts bite even further we'll continue to deliver efficiencies in this way as much as we can, although it's clearly getting more challenging every year."

Dave Nellist, Socialist Party councillor has been a lone voice against cuts on Coventry council. He stands in the tradition of councillors who stand up for those who elected them - such as in Liverpool in the 1980s and Poplar in the 1920s.

Why I'm standing

"I work in the NHS with vulnerable people with mental health problems. I'm standing for TUSC in the local government elections because none of the major parties are willing to stand up and support public services, which will be incredibly damaging for the people that I work for and I want to give those people a voice."
