Socialist Party councillor Dave Nellist demands that £250 is paid to every low-paid council worker in Coventry

The government imposed a two year public sector pay freeze but said that some public sector employees earning less than £21,000 a year would be eligible for a £250 payment in both years. However, local government employers are refusing to pay this £250.

Cllr Nellist said yesterday: "If the unions were taking action to challenge the two-year pay freeze I would fully support them". He added: "Given that Coventry council has already made provision for our lowest paid staff to receive £250, I think it should make that payment.

"I'm not asking the Labour council to break away from national negotiations. This would be a payment in addition to those negotiations".
