Save jobs at Borders

Over 1,100 workers may face redundancy as book chain Borders UK went into administration on 26 November 2009.

Insolvency firm MCR state they wish "to sell the business as a going concern". However, closing down sales are being advertised for all stores.

Camden Socialist Party member Dave Convery, who recently stopped working at Borders, said that previous owners ran the company into the ground with staff and stock not being replaced.

A management buyout took place in July and rehiring and restocking started again. But staff remained on pitiful wages, many earning just £5.80 per hour.

The company's failure is not the fault of workers. Management should open the company's books for public scrutiny so we can see where the money has gone.

Borders workers have been faced with silence by management. They expect to be cheated out of pay and jobs, as the owners make for the exit with their wallets intact.
