Former Liverpool councillor debates economic crisis at Merseyside meeting

Responding to news reports of 2000 job losses at Rolls Royce and thousands more at other household name companies, spokesperson for Merseyside Socialist Party Tony Mulhearn said;

"Over 20,000 jobs lost in the last fortnight nationwide are reflected on Merseyside with the two thousand jobs lost in construction across the region this year and repeated reports that thousands of Liverpudlians are struggling to make ends meet."

"That is why we have organised the meeting to discuss these issues and examine an alternative set of policies to solve them. The main speaker is PAUL ASTBURY, member of the Liverpool 47 socialist councillors who were expelled by Thatcher's district auditor for carrying out Socialist policies between 1983 and 1987. Everybody is welcome."

Tony further commented:

"Millions of words have been spoken and written about the current crisis. Who is responsible? What are the solutions? What will be the consequences for society?

"The main question for socialists is what will the crisis mean for the working class and what is the socialist solution?

"The unbridled free market so beloved of the Tories, Liberals and New Labour has been cast to outer darkness. The solution, they now argue, is regulation, regulation and more regulation. Will a regulated capitalism function in the interests of the working class?"

The meeting will be held on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2008 at the CASA CLUB (downstairs), 29 HOPE STREET, LIVERPOOL at 7.30pm. It is organised by Merseyside Socialist Party.
