Workers and students will demonstrate outside Connexions in Lewisham on Friday 18 March against youth unemployment and the closure of Connexions and Opening Doors.

Figures show that youth unemployment in Lewisham is amongst the worst in the whole country; 35.8% of 16-24 year olds are unemployed in the borough. Now the council is deciding to cut Connexions and Opening Doors.

Lewisham resident Joe Flood, Youth Fight for Jobs, says: "Lewisham knows they have one of the worst unemployment rates for young people in the country, yet they still cut important services such as Opening Doors and Connexions who help young people who are unemployed with a lot of the problems they might be going through.

"As a young person I'm outraged at Lewisham council's lack of care towards us, I will be going on the 18th of March to say we won't be a lost generation! We will fight for jobs and education!"

Ben Robinson, chair of Youth Fight for Jobs says: "The situation in Lewisham mirrors the national picture. Young people are increasingly finding themselves out of work and on the dole, while information and access to apprenticeships and education are increasingly rare.

"There is increasing talk of a lost generation; this government seems determined to take away all the maps."

Youth Fight for Jobs is a campaigning organisation launched in 2009 in response to the government trying to make young people pay for the recession.

It has the backing of the PCS, UCU, RMT, CWU, UNITE and BECTU trade unions.
