Equality Commission staff in PCS on eve of second strike

Members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) at the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) walked out for an hour on Wednesday 4 May in protest at a 68% cut in the EHRC budget.

They are preparing for another strike on Wednesday 11 May. No consultation has yet been offered to the union on the commission’s plans to more than halve staff to 200 and close its regional offices and helpline.

The second strike coincides with a march in London, supported by PCS, against cuts targeting disabled people. Disability issues account for the highest proportion of calls to the EHRC’s helpline.

There will be picket lines between 11am and 12 noon at the commission’s main offices in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, London and Manchester.
