Jarrow marchers to meet Iain Duncan Smith

On Friday 4 November six Jarrow marchers (who are part of the recreation of the Jarrow March of 75 years ago) will meet work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith in his Chingford constituency.

This penultimate day of the march will see a demonstration from the College of North East London in Tottenham, through Waltham Forest to Iain Duncan Smith’s surgery in Chingford.

The marchers will hand in postcards with messages from young people about their thoughts on Iain Duncan Smith’s policies.

Paul Callanan, national organiser of Youth Fight for Jobs said:

“Iain Duncan Smith has a lot to answer for.

“Unemployment is sky high and all he has to offer is slave labour schemes like the Work Programme where people are forced to work 30 hours a week for only their usual pittance dole money in return.

“He told the people of Merthyr in South Wales to get on a bus to Cardiff to find work. Well, we’ve just walked 330 miles to protest against his government’s policies and try and give everyone the chance of work. We’re keen to meet him to tell him why and the alternatives we believe there are.”
