UN condemns bedroom tax

UN condemnation of the bedroom tax

Nancy Taaffe, a London Socialist Party spokesperson and Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate in the 2014 council elections said:

The verdict from UN official Raquel Ronick confirms what socialists and anti-bedroom tax campaigners have said all along.

We fully agree with her view that the bedroom tax attacks the right of low paid and poor people to housing, a basic human right.

This verdict will also embarrass the Labour Party. While its leadership weeps crocodile tears over the tax, Labour councils are all falling in with the Con-Dems’ line and implementing the tax and the evictions that come with it.

The Labour councils that have implemented the tax should hang their heads in shame. The Labour Party could kill off the tax if Miliband instructed Labour councils to stop carrying out evictions immediately.

We are part of building anti-bedroom tax campaigns up and down the country and want to build a national movement against the tax and the Con-Dems’ austerity agenda as a whole.

The bedroom tax is yet another example of why we desperately need an alternative that stands in the interests of working class people. Labour’s resistance to the tax extends only as far as words, we need action now to stop this attack on the right to a home.

Councillors that have voted to implement the tax should face an army of anti-bedroom tax candidates at the 2014 council election. We call on anti-bedroom-tax campaigners to stand as part of TUSC in next year’s council elections.
