JJB workers fight sackings

ONLY WEEKS after JJB workers scored a massive victory over anti-union boss Dave Whelan (see the socialist issue 464), their union (GMB) is under serious attack. One steward has been sacked and the convenor is facing disciplinary action.

The bosses are attacking the union but the workers are balloting for strike action with a view to walking out before Christmas.

Sacked steward Chris Riley said: “…this is a direct attack against the union at JJB’s to undermine us after our recent victory. Our industrial relations weren’t the best before, now they are non-existent.”

The union has called a meeting on 6 December to discuss what action to take. Plans for co-ordinated protests outside JJB shops were being drawn up as we go to press.
