School crossing campaigner stands for TUSC

Brian Loader, Chesterfield Socialist Party

Derbyshire county council plans to scrap all school crossing patrols in the latest round of a monumental 157 million cuts programme.

Two young school workers, Lisa Pritchard and Kelly Stevens, have launched their own campaign to save the patrols.

They have been received tremendous support, collecting thousands of signatures from concerned parents. There is outrage at Labour councillors prepared to let kids attempt to cross some of the busiest roads in the county unaided.

Launch meeting

Lisa attended the recent TUSC election campaigns launch meeting for Chesterfield and Bolsover. She reported to the meeting how councillors had suggested other 'responsible adults' could assist instead of the patrols. Bang goes the advice to children about not speaking to strangers, then!

The meeting went on to unanimously select Matt Whale as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Chesterfield, and also adopted council candidates for the two areas.

To everyone's delight, Lisa put forward her name - and she will now be standing for TUSC in May.
