Yorkshire ISR and Socialist Students day of action
ISR and Socialist Students campaigners from Huddersfield, Wakefield, Leeds and Sheffield took part in a Huddersfield day of action to support Socialist Students and Socialist Party member Ian Slattery.
Iain Dalton Huddersfield Socialist Students
Ian is standing for the Save Huddersfield NHS campaign in Crosland Moor & Netherton ward in the Kirklees Council elections, the ward where Socialist Party member Dr Jackie Grunsell won a landslide victory last year.
We ran two stalls. One stall campaigned against racism and for a new workers' party, which campaigns in Huddersfield like those against NHS cuts and nursery closures could feed into. The other was a Campaign to Defeat Fees stall.
We then formed a Socialist Students/ISR contingent on the Save Our Services demonstration called jointly by the two Huddersfield anti-cuts campaigns. Jackie and Mel Mills, the Save Our Services candidate for Ashbrow ward, spoke at the rally. Ian also spoke, explaining that most of the current councillors are there to "feather their own nests" and that there would be more people prepared to stand up for ordinary workers like himself, Jackie and Mel if there was a mass party to represent ordinary people.
After the demonstration we held a regional youth meeting where we discussed our plans for the summer, including campaigning in the ISR Boost Our Pay campaign, building for the G8 summit in Germany and the Socialist Party northern activist school.
ISR and Socialist Students sold 18 copies of the socialist during the day.
