“I’ll be voting for the trade unionists”

Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) supporters in Lewisham held a weekend of election campaigning on 11-12 January.

Chris Flood is seeking re-election to the seat that he held on Lewisham council until 2010.

The weekend started with a car cavalcade which noisily announced our intention to stand widely at this year’s elections.

Cars went through the borough decked out in TUSC posters stating our opposition to the cuts. Loudspeakers and loudhailers said that TUSC was the only option if you wanted anti-cuts councillors elected.

On Sunday we held our first mass canvass of Telegraph Hill ward where Chris and another Socialist Party member Ian Page were previously councillors.

Around 20 TUSC supporters came from around London to participate. Before we got onto the streets we saw signs of support for our election campaign.

A woman sitting in the café near where we were preparing for the canvass said: “I’ll be voting for the trade unionists, I heard them going round in cars yesterday saying they were against cuts.”

We received a very friendly response from people on the doorstep. Many constituents remembered the work that our councillors had done in the ward. Lewisham TUSC has started 2014 with a bang!
