On today’s Daily Politics programme Dave Nellist, national chair of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), called for the nationalisation of the banks. Without TUSC, the question of making the super-rich 1% pay for the economic crisis would not feature in this election. TUSC’s is the only 100% anti-austerity challenge.

Andrew Neil introduced Dave as the leader of the ‘biggest of the small parties’. TUSC is standing 135 candidates in the general election. As Dave pointed out, this includes 22 former or current councillors with a combined 200 years of public service opposing cuts and privatisation. Dave himself was a Labour councillor and a Labour MP expelled for fighting the poll tax and privatisation.

Digby Jones, former director of the CBI, the trade union for big business, “took his hat off” to Dave for his principled stand of only taking a worker’s wage when an MP. But Dave did not hesitate to point the finger at Jones for his and the CBI’s role in destroying jobs and the economy and hoarding cash piles that could be used to fund public services.

Prior to Dave’s appearance, Chuka Umunna, former shadow business minister, had been on the programme promising more austerity. Dave said TUSC is committed to fighting all austerity. When pressed on where the money would come from Dave explained there is no shortage of cash, it’s just the question of who controls it. When the banks crashed the economy, he said, “the Bank of England found £375 billion down the back of the sofa” to bail them out.

TUSC is contesting 12 of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Wales (30%), 113 of the 533 seats in England (21%), and 10 of the 59 Scottish constituencies (17%). A list of candidates, with contact details is available on the TUSC elections website: www.tusc2015.com

TUSC is also standing in around 625 council seats.
