Over 50 Fire Brigades Union (FBU) reps from around Greater Manchester met, along with FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack and President Alan McLean, to discuss their response to the outrageous move by Greater Manchester Fire Authority to sack its entire workforce. Now the fire authority has backed down and withdrawn the threat of mass dismissal and agreed to re-enter negotiations.

Greater Manchester Fire Authority is planning to cut 280 firefighter jobs and 26 fire engines. Fire Brigades Union (FBU) members have been protesting these plans, including a huge lobby of the fire authority meeting which approved the cuts. To make up for the loss in staff, the firefighters that remain will be forced to work longer hours.
