Newcastle council cuts: opportunity for trade union fightback

Newcastle residents and council staff have borne the brunt of Tory austerity. £200 million of central government funding has been stripped from the cash-starved council since 2010. An important refuge for women and children fleeing domestic crises is slated for closure.

We Won't Move campaigners, along with Socialist Party and local Unite activists, lobbied Greenwich council on 27 October against the tenant tax 'pay to stay' and the council's lack of action in opposing the Housing Act. Council residents in the borough had received notices from Savills.

Fight to save care homes in Carlisle

Cumbria County Council is planning to close three care homes and replace them with another building which only has 60 beds instead of the current 117. Another four homes will be closed in West Cumbria. Only those suffering from dementia and the most complex needs will get a place. But what about respite care? What about family carers?

Corbyn's praise for Cardiff Labour is mistaken

Corbyn needs allies to take on the Tories and big business, but he's making a big mistake if he thinks he can count on most Labour councillors. At Labour Party conference he applauded Cardiff's Labour-run council for not outsourcing Cardiff Bus. But it was less than a year ago Cardiff Bus workers forced to into prolonged strike action against poverty pay.

Over 50 Fire Brigades Union (FBU) reps from around Greater Manchester met, along with FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack and President Alan McLean, to discuss their response to the outrageous move by Greater Manchester Fire Authority to sack its entire workforce. Now the fire authority has backed down and withdrawn the threat of mass dismissal and agreed to re-enter negotiations.
