May Day 2002 Fight For A Socialist Alternative

May Day 2002: Fight For A Socialist Alternative

MAY DAY is international workers’ day. All over the world workers and young people will be demonstrating against attacks on workers’ rights, poverty and inequality, war and the destruction of our environment.

    Clare James

All are caused by capitalism – a society run for the profit of the few at the expense of the majority of the world’s population.

The so-called ‘war on terror’ being led by Bush and Blair has already caused the deaths of thousands of innocent people throughout Afghanistan.

The current crisis in the Middle East, with the bloody attacks and murders of Palestinians led by Ariel Sharon, highlights the brutal nature of capitalism.

Workers and young people internationally are fighting back. 13 million workers took part in a general strike in Italy on 16 April.

The anti-capitalist movement is still growing. In March this year over 700,000 people marched against the European Union summit in Barcelona.

Capitalist leaders cannot meet anywhere in the world without being met by hundreds of thousands of protesters from across the world.

The anti-capitalist and trade union movements need to continue to make links and fight together against capitalism and the terrible effects it has on our lives. We need to fight for a socialist society, where society is democratically run by and for the needs of the majority, not the minority.

There are enough resources in the world for everyone to have a decent standard of living; there is no reason why anyone should live in poverty.

Join the May Day protests in London and your local areas, join the Socialist Party and step up the fight for a socialist world free from poverty and war.
